Welcome to this segment on World News at the Corridor Tribune. I am Ida Wells. This year, Mexico is at the top of the list as the most dangerous country for journalists. Fifteen were killed in 2022 alone, making it the deadliest year for press on record. We have our correspondent from Mexico, Maria Rodriguez, joining us now. Maria, the first question is, why are journalists being targeted? The situation for media professionals has been precarious for years. Since the start of the Mexican drug war, 133 journalists have been killed directly related to their work, but it has worsened of late. No other country has seen so many journalists killed in 2022 because of their work, except for Ukraine, where they have a war going on. The journalists that are murdered are investigating corruption, human abuse, or cases related to narco-politics. And corruption war, authorities have close ties with organized crime, especially the drug cartels. What do you think can be done to stop this? The government has taken measures to improve the situation, but they're mostly ineffective. More than 90 % of journalist killings are not accounted for. The government and our president must push for accountability and safety of journalists without impunity. Maria, you're one of the leading voices against crimes on journalists. Have you been threatened before? Yes, multiple times, but the truth should be told. Absolutely. Thank you so much for doing this, and we all stand with you and the journalist community.
